Editorial Review:

Amazon.co.uk Review:
Final Fantasy VI, originally released as Final Fantasy III on the Super Nintendo, is a straight SNES conversion, so its 2-D graphics and 16-bit sounds are admittedly sub-par by PlayStation standards. However, SquareSoft have added new, beautifully animated movies for this release, and the endearingly melodramatic characters, a genuinely epic story line, and rock-solid gameplay make Final Fantasy VI just as absorbing today as when it was Final Fantasy III. To top it off, also included is a demo of Final Fantasy X (only playable on PS2). --Joe Hon

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - brilliant!
One of the, if not the best final fantasy story of all time. I want to see a full 3d remake of this before 7.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - One of the Best.
Final Fantasy VI on the Playstation finally gave European players the chance to experience the game without the need to have a Super Nintendo (Realised on the system as Final Fantasy III) and it was worth it.

The game focuses on one character to begin with but other characters become introduced and each have an amazing story, the characters themselves are so indepth that you will not have the problem as some of those pointless characters such as Quina from Final Fantasy IX and Yuffie from Final Fantasy VII. There is plenty of comedy which you can find amusing with the dialogue in the game and a few touching moments.

The gameplay itself is wonderful, the use of espers is probably one of the best system in the series, you can use a range of fighting techniques that can help so well in a battle.

The graphics have so much colour and depth, it has many tricks and the birdseye view on the world map as you use a character can change when using a chocobo, seeing the bird and your character in front of you, making it more enjoyable when traveling the world map.

Sound is perfect, after a while you can find yourself humming along to the tunes, the music being a strong point of Uematsu's career. It is fantastic for each parts of the game, the soft ballad when your going through a touching moment, and strong ballads when seeing the main enemy in the game.

I recommend that Final Fantasy VI is worth buying, even if your not fully sure, rent it if you can. But in my opinion, buy it, it is worth the money and the whole experience, becoming a prized collection in the Final Fantasy series.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - What can I say...
I consider this game to be amongst my favourite, if not my absolute favourite game. This, alongside games such as Digimon world 2003, Shadowhearts Covenant, Oblivion (Yes I rate FFVI even higher than this masterpiece) and others, have completed my gaming life. I could die a happy man knowing I have played and completed this game.

Those who have slated this game are the type of people who cannot play retro games, the ones who lose themselves in lifelike graphics. It's easy enough to lose yourself in this encapsulating story, and amongst most fan sites it has indeed the greatest storyline by vote, followed by either VII or X. Now I never rated VII very highly, simply because I played this first.

The music is perfect, each piece setting the scene for what you are about to do. And with a host of excellent characters and villains this game will forever stay on my PS3 as a save. I have completed the game totally, I mean absolutely completed this game. Fourth time as well. Each time you play it tends to be slightly different, or very different. But each time it is so much fun you won't be dissapointed.

For those of you who don't have it, trust me it's worthwhile. even f you just want to hear Kefka's sprite laugh.

And finally a nifty piece of info. According to a family friend, who works for Square, they are considering porting it into the new age, full 3D graphics, voices, everything that those who hated the game love. How many other games have survived so far as to be ported TWICE!

My only quarrel is the GBA version gets extras

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Poor Emulation
Unfortunately for us European gamers, Squaresoft and Nintendo felt that we wouldn't embrace the RPG genre during the 16 bit Super Nintendo era. Therefore, we missed out on several exceptional games from that time, one of those being Final Fantasy VI.

Ever since Final Fantasy VII became a smash hit worldwide, many had been curious about previous entries in the franchise, and Squaresoft was happy to ablige by releasing ports in either compilation packs (Final Fantasy Origins and Anthology) or stand-alone entries like this one. It seems, however, that Squaresoft was so eager to get these games released into the market, that they neglected to iron out various emulation problems.

Since Final Fantasy VI was a game designed to run on a cartridge based system, it was understandable that there would be some emulation quirks when bringing the game to a CD based system, but I'm certain they could have done better than this.

The first obvious flaw is the display. Not only do we have borders on the top and bottom of the screen (something that is unfortunately common in PAL territories), there are also borders on the left and right! It's as though you're playing through another TV display through your own TV.

A second flaw comes from the music, which surprisingly doesn't sound as good as the Super Nintendo version. Composer Nobuo Uematsu has crafted some superb material for VI, and to hear it sounding muffled on a capable system like the Playstation is an insult.

The last glaring flaw is of course the loading times. Doing something as simple as entering the menu takes several seconds to load and battles can take even longer. This isn't a problem on VII, VIII and IX because they were designed for a CD based system.

If you can force yourself to overlook these problems, VI is still a fantastic game and the crowning achievment of the 16 bit RPG era. Personally, I'd recommend the Game Boy Advance release instead. Aside from being a fairly good port of the original, it also includes additional content and is a perfect fit for the hand held cartridge based system.
