![]() Rating: - Out of timeAnachronisms always mar my enjoyment of "true stories", and aviation anoraks will be curious to see some lingering close-ups on Gibraltar airfield (depicted here just prior to Operation Torch in 1942) of a squadron of Shackleton maritime reconnaisance aircraft, which did not enter service with the RAF until 1951. Rating: - A British made war drama at it's bestWhile browsing the Amazon UK web site I came across THE SILENT ENEMY starring Laurence Harvey. As soon as I seen the title I checked and read the product description to see if this movie was the one I was hoping it would be.It was.THE SILENT ENEMY is a movie based on an actual event that takes place in the darkest days of World War 11.It's 1941, the location,Gibralter in the Mediterranean Sea.British war ships are being sunk while at anchor. It turns out that the Italian 10th Flotilla, operating from a harbor in neutral Spain are attaching mines to the undersides of the war ships using two man electrically powered underwater chariots specially fitted with the lethal mines. This movie recreates the efforts of a small group (2) of British Divers, and an explosives expert Lt.(N) Lionel Crabbe played by Laurence Harvey.(the same actor that played Colonel Travis in John Wayne's film The Alamo)Lt (N) Crabbe has no diving experience, but quickly learns the trade. The group is able to capture one of the Chariots when they force it to the surface when the Italians are on a raid to sink British Warships. When I first seen THE SILENT ENEMY on Canadian Television (yes I'm a Canadian, born and raised and living on the prairies)in the 1960's it was just another war film ,but well made, from the United Kingdom. When I watched the movie this time, I was particularily facinated by the underwater sequences. It was like I was watching the James Bond movie Thunderball, except folks this movie, THE SILENT ENEMY was made in 1958.The action is silent in this under water sequence, but exciting, with the Italian and British divers fighting each other, cutting air lines, smashing face masks and so on.Actor Sidney James plays Chief Petty Officer Thorpe And no, Mr.James is not in any of the underwater sequences.I most associate Sidney James with the Carry On films, but to me Sidney James is believable as the CPO.I hope I did not give too much of this movies plot away.I have been a World War 11 movie buff since I was a boy of Seven that's fify five years and counting. This movie is right up there as one to watch and well worth the price. If anyone knows how to make very good war movies it's the United Kingdom. This DVD is Region 2 and filmed in B&W. Rating: - Underwater heroesCalypsopiper is right in every regard. This is not a big-budget epic, but a study of men doing dangerous, largely unremarked work in World War II. Laurence Harvey, strikingly blonde and as brusque as a lean James Robertson Justice, arrives in Gibraltar to defuse bombs and quickly takes over a team of divers who destroy enemy mines. Fans of British character actors will spot Alec McCowen, Nigel Stock, David Lodge, Alan Webb, Cyril Shapps (Spanish, this time around) and a very young Derren Nesbitt, who's as easy to miss as Robert Shaw in The Dambusters. Sid James almost steals the show, but it's lean, unsentimental Laurence Harvey, his eyes like chips of ice as he defuses a warhead, who lingers in the mind. In black and white, 4:3 and a decent print, too. Rating: - Great film!A super British War film! A must for any fan of the type!
